My Love Hate Relationship with Marguerite!

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

You know when you're sitting with a nice cuppa just scrolling through Instagram and you come across the most beautiful dress? It's flattering to the wearer, it has pockets! You scroll some more and see it again and again. You decide to make one yourself!

This was my experience with the Sew Over It Marguerite dress. I bought the pattern and cut out my usual size as ive made lots of Lisa Comforts patterns before. After a careful construction process, I tried on the dress...............horrific! It was terrible on me, I couldn't believe how unflattering it was, how could this be? Without a further glance or thought I threw it on the UFO pile and promptly put it out of my mind.

A few months later one of my favourite vloggers Mary Ellen @shesewshappiness was showcasing all of her previous Marguerite makes and they really were both stunning and inspiring. So I went back to the drawing board and dug out my old pattern.

This time I decided to start with the waist size (38). It was the one aspect of the dress that was really off last time. I decided on a size 20 waist band. The bodice was the next issue. I used my Upper bust (40) to choose the size for this. I went with a size 16 at the shoulder, graded to an 18 at the bust then a 20 at the waist.

I will be the first to admit that the pattern pieces did look odd but i pushed on and carefully made up the dress in a beautiful Viscose crepe from Rainbow Fabrics, Kilburn. I normally shorten the bodice of my Sew Over It patterns but I wanted the fullness to remain in this, so I didn't this time.

The construction of this dress is simple, and the instructions as always are so easy to follow. There are also many sew Along vlogs on YouTube if you get stuck

The result was everything I wanted it to be. The dress was comfortable, and I loved the aesthetic. The pockets are obviously a bonus too. I used a cute label from a previous Sew Hayley Jane box because........Well, I do love spots.
